The Story Behind NoClu! Golf

The idea behind NoClu! Golf and Putterhead was teed up on the golf course (where it should be) by two old high school buddies - Glen and Steve. Glen, affectionately known to his colleagues as the "Bald Eagle," is a senior executive with the federal government. Steve (let's call him the "Bald Beagle" for reasons you would understand if you met him), owns a communications business. Our kids are grown. Spring chickens we ain't! We've been playing golf since our high school days 40 years ago but don't often get out together even though we only live a few miles apart. This was one of those rare times to which we both were looking forward. Neither of us is headed to the golf hall of fame. We shoot mostly in the low 90s (sometimes higher) although we have been known to spend a few rounds in the 80s, even low 80s on a really good day. But, we don't have many of those really good days.

This happened to be one of those chilly, windy fall afternoons and a day when few things were going right. You know what that's like. Shot, expletive. Another shot, another expletive. But, we were having fun nevertheless. Finally, after another of those shots, this from a slope in the left rough under a clump of trees on #14 - and, of course, another expletive - the good looking one of us (we'll let you figure out who) frustratingly mumbled, "Man, I just have no clue."

We looked at each other and laughed and it took us about two seconds to realize what just happened - besides another messed up shot. We're all just a bunch of clueless golfers who play for the fun of it. How cool would it be to stick that idea on shirts and hats and other golf stuff for everyone to enjoy? That's all there was to it. That's how NoClu! Golf was started. We left the course and went to work.

Sometimes great ideas come at the strangest times. Out of nowhere came the next one.

As we were putting the NoClu! Golf idea on paper, the term "Putterhead" was hatched. Neither of us had ever heard the word. It doesn't exist in the dictionary. It just popped out of our heads and got typed into the computer. Zap! But, it seemed appropriate. Mechanics are "Wrencheads." Motorcycle enthusiasts are "Motorheads." We are what we are -- "Putterheads" - and proud of it!

So, there you have it. The riveting story behind NoClu! Golf and Putterhead. It isn't very sexy or exciting. Sure ain't movie material. Just a couple of bearded hackers with funky backswings who had an idea. And, we're not doing this for the money. Just for the fun of it. But, we did want to do it right so that you would have quality logo apparel that would be fun and unique (and that you and your golf buddies would get a laugh from) that you could enjoy for many years and rounds of golf to come. Hope we accomplished our mission.
